HOT ! Antique Deco hair comb hair ornament tiara dragon faux tortoiseshell c1920(7479)

Antique Art Nouveau - Art Deco hair comb hair ornament or tiara. Made of an early material that emulates expensive tortoiseshell. Possibly French.  Made circa 1890\'s - 1920\'s. 

Measurements: 

Weight is 22.2 grams. Approximately 5 inches (13cm) long; approximately 4.25 inches (11cm) at widest part. 

Description : 

A very large arching comb or hair ornament, worn as a crown or tiara. Holds hair in place as well as being ultra-decorative. It is made of an early form of celluloid, plastic or resin or possibly even horn (we don\'t have the technology to identify exactly what it is), clearly intended to immitate blond tortoiseshell. It is a golden, light orange in color that gleams as light catches it and sinks to a dark brown in the shade. Very solid and sturdy - will support a thick/heavy head of hair. The design features an elaborate dragon with coiling, winding long tail. Yawning open mouthed with long narrow horns and spikes around mouth and eyes. It is set amidst elegantly flowing openwork foliage. Chinese or Japanese influence is clear, but the design appeals to anyone. Beautiful. Versatile - can be worn in a number of ways, by day or night.Ideally worn with hair piled up in a chignon or bun, but shown simply used as a comb in the \'photos.

Condition:

It was in perfect shape until I dropped it and a tiny piece broke off. I have redone all of the \'photos so that you can see the missing bit magnified. In reality, the comb is still highly wearable. THE STORY:

Until well into the 20th century, women had very long hair and hair ornaments, including tiaras and large combs were a large part of their wardrobes and jewelry. This comb combines the fine aesthetics of the late 19th century when Europeans were fascinated by anything \'oriental\' and dragons became a popular feature of jewelry and other accessories.When we see hair combs from the period, they are usually a) much smaller than this one; b) not in great condition and c) don\'t have the rare aesthetic appeal of this comb. Judging by the great condition of this comb, it was either rarely worn or very well taken care of as it is in close to pristine condition. It combines the practicality of holding the hair up with a stunning design and great quality.
