Story Behind the Art: Southwestern rugs draw from the long-standing weaving traditions of Native American tribes in the American Southwest, especially the Navajo (Diné), Pueblo, and Hopi peoples. Historically woven from hand-spun wool and dyed with natural pigments sourced from plants, minerals, and insects, these rugs developed the iconic earthy palettes associated with desert landscapes—clay red, sand beige, charcoal, ivory, indigo, and muted blues. Their defining characteristic is bold geometric patterning: stepped shapes, diamonds, zigzags, crosses, and linear rhythms arranged with symmetry and repetition. Over time, modern interpretations have softened their palettes into washed neutrals and pale blues, making the style more adaptable to contemporary interiors. Today, Southwestern rugs remain highly searched under “Southwestern wool rug,” “Navajo-style geometric carpet,” and “tribal desert rug design.”
