Name: Ridiculously Good 1920\'s Persian Karaja with Monumental Ivory Medallion & Fiery Tribal Geometry
Size: 3.4 x 4.1Age: Circa 1920Origin: Karaja Village – Northwest Persia (Heriz Region)Pile: Hand-knotted wool on cotton foundation
This stunning 1920\'s Persian Karaja is the definition of a bold tribal masterpiece — vibrant, graphic, and overflowing with the kind of character only true village-woven rugs can deliver.
The rug opens with a rich brick-red field, glowing with warmth and depth from beautifully aged natural dyes. Anchoring the design is a large commanding hexagonal medallion rendered in crisp ivory, deep navy, coral, and soft turquoise, creating an incredible focal point that instantly pulls the eye.
Radiating outward from the medallion is a lively field of angular tribal motifs, hooked “crab” forms, stylized florals, and geometric symbols — the unmistakable language of Karaja weaving. These motifs feel structured yet wonderfully spontaneous, giving the rug that authentic village personality that distinguishes Karaja pieces from their more formal neighbors in the Heriz region.
The color palette is absolutely spectacular. Tomato reds and deep brick tones dominate the field, while inky navy blues, crisp ivory highlights, coral pinks, turquoise flashes, and soft sage greens bring incredible depth and contrast. The colors are bold but balanced — vivid yet beautifully mellowed after more than a century.
Surrounding the field are intricate geometric borders and guard stripes that frame the rug like a work of art. These layered borders add movement and detail while giving the rug that strong architectural structure Karaja rugs are known for.
Karaja rugs are woven in villages near the famous Heriz weaving region in northwest Iran, where artisans produce carpets known for their powerful geometric medallions, bold tribal motifs, and incredibly durable construction.
This piece was hand-knotted using the symmetrical Turkish (Ghiordes) knot, a technique prized for its strength and longevity. The rug features a medium-fine weave and resilient wool pile, giving it both softness and durability.
Nearly a century later, the structure remains strong — a testament to the skill of the original weaver.
Beautiful vintage condition with healthy pile and vibrant color throughout. Minor wear at the very edges and corners is consistent with age and only adds to the rug’s authentic antique character.
Professionally cleaned and ready to be enjoyed.
Some rugs decorate a room.
This one transforms it.
Between the monumental ivory medallion, the electric brick-red field, and the explosion of tribal geometry, this Karaja has the kind of visual energy that instantly anchors a space.
It’s bold enough for modern interiors, soulful enough for traditional homes, and full of the history that only genuine village-woven Persian rugs can carry.
Nearly a century old. Completely one-of-a-kind. And impossible to ignore.
