Meet Hayley

Vintage Caucasian Kazak Lenkoran Runner Hallway rug, c1940.

The medallions called ‘Tosbaga’ which means tortoise with squares with double T motifs in between called ‘Sainak’ among human and animal figures against a black background framed by angular flowers border giving the carpet more depth as well as adding a subtle sense of movement. The weaver(s) took inspiration of tortoises from the nearby Caspian Sea. However you perceive it, its a beautiful old Lenkoran rug from the Caucasus.

Please note this hand made vintage rug is not 100% rectangular as shown on the photo. Personally I believe this adds to the beauty of this piece as it was hand knotted without any drawings, but merely from the weaver own imagination.
