HOT ! KNOT TOGETHER RUNNER - 200cm x 60cm (6\'6 x 2\')

Knot Together is a collection of hand knotted rugs and runners created from a collaboration between Emma Mellor and the skilled Nepalese weavers from Kathmandu. The onus of the project was not merely on an end design but rather the process and journey taken through the many stages in creating hand knotted carpets. Emma Mellor explains, ‘The really interesting part of rug making for me is the methodical nature of hand knotting, the cultivation of natural products such as wool and plant dyes and how these simple ingredients are knotted together to create individual works of art.’ The three scenic depictions of wild flower meadows play dividends to the rugs natural origins, whereby the image of a meadow from which the Nepalese wool from grazing sheep and colourful dye from plants and roots are extracted. These natural individual ingredients are cultivated and transformed by the processes of spinning, dying, knotting, washing, clipping and drying. Emma says ‘It is the process whereby art imitates nature and the rug maintains the image of the natural world even in its domestic setting.’  These natural designs not only transcend liminal boundaries between rural landscapes and urban surroundings, but reflect the importance of sustainable practices within this art form. Individual elements, \'knotted together\' combine into these beautiful designs whereby they are still displayed in their original forms, representing a natural cyclical transformation. These rugs are Goodweave certified ensuring that no child labour is employed for the sake of cheap mass production and further that a timeless , high quality product is guaranteed. Though natural components and wild flowers are impermanent, sustainable, hand knotting under the Goodweave association ensures a lasting frieze of these striking wild flower meadows.
