In the early 1870s during Reconstruction the corridor known then as Wheat Street began to grow into the heart of Black Atlanta. Churches like Wheat Street Baptist and First Congregational anchored community life and set the stage for a thriving business district. The street was later renamed Auburn Avenue and by the early twentieth century it concentrated banks insurers newspapers and clubs that defined success for a new Black middle class. In 1956 Fortune called it the richest Negro street in the world and civic leaders such as John Wesley Dobbs helped give it the name Sweet Auburn that endures today.
